Before we get going on the new season, all of us at Sunnyside would like to pass our condolences to the Buttimer family on the sad passing of Mrs Margeret Buttimer, may she Rest In Peace.

Well, the new season is upon us!!  And for Cork boxing, it is going to be a busy start to the year.  First up, Cork Boxing will celebrate 100 Years with the people of Cork on Saturday 6th Sept. at Bishop Lucey Park. It promises to be a great day, Corks olympic boxers will be honored with the unveiling of a plaque to perpetuate their achievements. The Lord Mayor of Cork and Legendary Irish coach Billy Walsh will do the honors.

Following that, there is the planned County Board Centenary Dinner-Dance in October. Should be a great night where The Cork Amateur Boxer of the Century will be presented with the, Albie Murphy Accolade, named in honor of the late great legendary Leeside Boxing Coach and of course a Sunnyside BC man.

I can't finish without mentioning the exploits of Cork's one and only Christina Desmond. Christina keeps on going from strength to strength, recently being declared as Number 4 in, not Cork, not Irerland but in the World. Well done Christina, you have the whole country behind you!!

Well, as I said, the new season is upon us, so Let's Get Ready To Rumble!!!!

Next up for Sunnyside BC, is our one and only Jamie Long at The Celtic Cup in Dungarvan!  Jamie has never looked so sharp and is chomping at the bit to get going.  Come on Jamie, you have all of

Sunnyside BC

behind you, you can do it!!

Saturday 27/09/2014

Hard luck to Jamie Long tonight. Jamie lost out in a close fight in the semi finals of the Celtic Box-Cup. Well done Jamie, you did us proud as usual, it's onwards and upwards from here. Jamie will be back in training on Monday continuing his preparations for this year's Intermediate Championships and the Elite Championships in the new year.

Wednesday 08/10/2014

Best of luck to Patrick McDonagh who has entered the All Ireland Under 22 Championships this month. Patrick will represent Sunnyside Boxing Club in the 91+ KG category.

Meanwhile, the club is growing from strength with 10 more boxers registering this year. All boxers are training hard and preparing for the upcoming season. We are delighted to have Michael Roche returning to the club in a coaching capacity.  Michael won five Senior All Ireland titles, fought regularly for the Irish team, culminating in him representing Ireland at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games!

Friday 03/810/2014

Congratulations to our head coach Kieran Joyce, who was named "Cork Boxer of The Century" at the recent Cork County Board Centenary Dinner Dance.  It was a great honour and something that Kieran was so proud of. "To be honoured by the people of my own city and county is the proudest moment in my career", commented Kieran.

Also on the night, Christina Desmond (Macroom BC) was awarded the "Cork Champion of Champions" and Luke Delaney, "Most Stylish Boxer! Well done guys. Our 20 current Irish Champions were also warded on the night, each receiving a "Jack McCauliffe" medal.

20/10/2014

To congratulate our head coach Kieran Joyce, on his recent award of "Cork Boxer of The Century" at The Cork County Boxing Board Centenary Dinner Dance, the boxers of Sunnyside Boxing Club presented Kieran with a cake following tonight's training session. Congratulations Kieran from all at the club!!

Thanks ver much to Steven Cairns who visited our club tonight and sparred a number of our boxers. Thanks Steven.

25/10/2014

We visited Togher Boxing Club this morning for a sparring session with Togher and Spartan boxing clubs.  All our boxers, Christian Murphy, Alex and Jake Higgins, Conor Downey and Kieran Roche performed very against some great opposition. It was a great morning for all boxers involved. This is what our boxers need, plenty of good sparring. Thanks to Togher and Spartan boxing clubs and in particular to Togher BC for having us over.

28/10/2014

The Lord Mayor of Cork, at a Council Meeting which is still sitting, has just announced that Cork Boxer of the Century, Kieran Joyce will receive a full Civic Reception at The City Hall..........This is a great honour for Kieran, his family, his club and Cork Boxing.

In further news, our very own Jamie Long is to enter the ring against Martin Noonan (Riverstown BC) on Friday night at the City Hall, as part of the Canty Cup Tournament.

31/10/2014

Congratulations to Kieran Roche and Jamie Long, who both represnted Sunnyside BC and The Cork County team at The Cork City Hall tonight, boxing on the Cork Boxing Centenary Tournament.  Kieran gave a it his all in an explosive encounter with Tony O'Reilly (Spartan BC) in the first fight of the night. Unfortunately, Kieran came out on the wrong side of a close decision.  Meanwhile, Jamie Long gave a supreme performance in his bout with Martin Noonan (Riverstown BC). Jamie dominated from the start and won every round convincingly. It was a great night of boxing, followed by a breakfast banquet at The Montenotte Hotel the next morning for all boxers and coaches.  The morning was hosted by The Cork County Boxing Board.

08/11/2014

Jamie gave a an outsanding performance at The Munster Intermediate Championships today, but was on the wrong side of a very strange decisiopn. Jamie will take his performance from today and from last week at The Cork City Hall, into the All Ireland Intermediate Championships next week. With his current form, the sky is the limit!! Let's bring that title home Jamie!!

06/12/2014

We were up at The Glen Boxing Club this afternoon for the latest round of The Cork Leagues. Representing the club, we had Saoirse Roche, Lee Quinlan and Christian Murphy.  First up was Lee Quinlan who put in a show stopping performance, winning by a first round TKO!!  Next in the ring was Saoirse Roche who was impressive, winning her bout on a unanimous points decision.  Finally, we had Christian Murphy who, although he didn't get the decision in a close contest, performed well and well and showed great promise.  All three boxers were competing for the first time in a competitive bout and did the club proud.  Well done all three of you!!

07/12/2014

It was another good day for Sunnyside BC today at The Munster Leagues. First up was Kieran Roche, who boxed superbly and won an easy dwecision. Next up was Kieran's younger sister Saoirse Roche who gave another great performance to record her second unanimous victory in two days. Finally we had Jake Higgins who while not getting the win, boxed a great fight. He was in against a much taller opponent but consistently got past his opponenets reach and brought the fight to him. Well done to all three.

18/06/2015

Tonight we organised a football match, involving boxers, coaches and parents and it was a tremendous success, with a great turnout! It was a great match and a funfilled night, topped off with a feast of pizzas and hot food, kindly sponsored by Tom Harrington, Apache Pizza, Hollyhill!!  Thanks Tom, it was greatly appreciated by all at the club!

13/12/2014

Sunnyside BC continues on it's upward spiral.  It was two out of two today for the club at The Cork Leagues. First up, we had Jake "The Black" Higgins who dominated from the first bell to the last, winning a deserved unanimous decision.  Next in the ring for the club was TJ Homan, in his first fight of the season folowing a lay off due to an injury. TJ picked up where he left off last year, with a magnificent performance against a taller and heavier opponent, adding another win to his record. Well done boys!!

16/12/2014

Kieran Joyce our head coach was awarded a civic reception tonight at The Cork City Hall, by the Lord Mayor, in recognition of him being named Cork Boxer of the Century.  It was well deserved, Kieran has achieved so much in boxing. He won 6 Irish Senior Elite titles, represented Ireland at two Olympics (Los Angeles 19884 and Seoul 1988), won a European bronze medal, competed in World Championships and represented hias country on over 100 occasions, boxing and beating many future professional World Champions.  Since hanging up his gloves, Kieran has turned his eye to coaching and in addition to coaching Irish teams, Kieran has been Sunnyside BC's head coach for the best part of 25 years, where he has developed many a young boxer into a successful champion of the sport. Well done Kieran on well deserved recognition.

17/01/2015

It was a great day for Sunnyside BC today, with four wins out of five. First we travelled to The Cork Leagues.  First up was Conor Downey in his debut, vs Tyler Lewis St Colemans BC. Conor was involved in an explosive fight between two, what I can only call warriors.  However, in the end Conor's strength and fitness proved to be too much for his opponent, with Conor taking the decision at the final bell.  Next in was Jake "The Black" Higgins against Cathal O'Sullivan, Duhallow BC.  Jake put in a tremendous performance, giving it 100% from start to finish against a tough opponent and deservedly had his hand raised at the end.  Lee Quiiligan followed Jake and added another win for Sunnyside BC against Matas Karanvicius Kanturk BC. Last up for us at the Leagues, was Christian Murphy.  Christian landed the cleaner punches throughout the fight and after a slow start, began to dominate the fight half ways through the second round and finished off with a very impressive 3rd round. Unfortunately, it was Christian's opponent, Patrick McCarthy Mayfield BC, who got the judges' decision.

We then travelled to the Togher BC Tournament where TJ Homan was our sole representative.  TJ is maturing into an intelligent boxer this year, picking his shots well and using the ring intelligently.  TJ produced another great performance winning on an unanimous decision against John McDonagh St John's BC.

25/01/2015

Following on from our succesfull day yesterday, we now turned our sights on The Munster Leagues!  Again, Conor Downey was unfotunate that his opponent pulled out again.  First into the ring today, we had Jake "The Black" Higgins, who dominated this fight, against D Malcaves (Fermoy BC), from the first bell to the last.  Jake has a bright future ahead of him!! Unfortunately our next boxer, Christian Murphy, although giving it his all,  was unfortunate to not get the decision.  Finally, we had Saoirse Roche in the ring. Saoirse, once again showed why we have such high hopes for her this season, with a first round TKO!! this was Saoirse's 6th fight and 6th win!! Rock on Sunnyside BC!!!

TJ Homan, with his hand raised at The Togher BC Tournament 17/1/2015

24/01/2015

We had four bouts scheduled for today's Cork Leagues at The Glen. First up was TJ Homan, in against the classy James Connors (Muskerry BC).  This was a very close fought bout with nothing between the two.  The decision went with Connors on the day but TJ with a little more fitness will be very hard to beat this year.  Keep up the good work TJ!!  Next in we had Lee Quilligan vs G O'Mahony (Kanturk BC) and Lee continued on his winning streak!  It was now Saoirse Roche's turn! Saoirse was meeting Charlene Kenny (Midleton BC) for the second time. Their first fight was an all action affair and this bout did not disappoint! Both girls gave it their all but the decision was never in doubt and Saoirse took the decision once again! Unfortunately, Conor Downey's opponent had to pull out of their bout and so he went home still hingry for his next fight!!

Conor Downey (Sunnyside BC) Vs Tyler Lewis (St Colmans BC)

(07&08)/02/2015

Next up we had the Cork County Championships where we entered 8 boxers, four winning Cork County titles!!

Lee Quilligan(Top Left) Michael McDonagh(TopRight)

Saoirse Roche(Bottom Left) Conor Downey(Bottom Right)

31/01/2015

Another fantastic day for Sunnyside BC today, we had 3 wins out of 4 at The Cork Leagues!!  First up today for Sunnyside BC at The Cork Leagues, we had Alex "Hurricane" Higgins. Watching him, you would never believe it was his first fight, winning on a unanimous decision.  Next in for Sunnyside BC today was Conor "Dynamite" Downey! Conor once again gave a powerful performance, to record his second win.  Next in for Sunnysude BC was Saoirse "Mo Chuisle" Roche! Saoirse came out for the first bell like a whirlwind, throwing punches at a rate that brought back memories of her uncle and coach, Kieran Joyce's, times in the ring!!! Saoirse's opponent, Lily Coffey, in only her first fight, put up a strong defense but Saoirse proved too strong and won the fight, recording her 5th win out of 5!!  Finally, we had Paddy "The Rock" Stokes. This was Paddy's debut and he was in against a much taller and experienced boxer, Jake Adair (Macroom BC)> Paddy didn't get the decision today but did himself and the club proud, with a very determined performance.

01/02/2015

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Sunnyside BC at The Munster Leagues today. Conor Downey's opponent was a no show, making it a wasted trip to Limerick for Conor. So it was up to the two Higgins brothers, Alex and Jake, to fly the Sunnyside flag. First in was Alex and he produced another magnificent performance to follow up on his win yesterday with another unanimous decision. Alex's brother Jake followed him into the ring. Although I thought Jake won the first and third rounds with an even second round, he came out on the wrong side of a split decision. So it was one win and one loss today, making it four wins out of six for the club this weekend, another great set of results!!

07/02/2015

Sunnyside BC were back in action at The Cork Leagues today, with five boxers on the bill.Conor Downey recorded his third win in a row with a powerful performnace, winning by TKO in the third round.  Alex Higgins also made it three wins out of three, winning by unanimous decision.  It's hard to believe that this was only Alex's third fight!!  Our three other boxers, TJ Homan, Jake Higgins and Lee St Ledger(on his debut) were all involved in close fights with all three unfortunately coming out on the wrong side of spit decisions.  Well done to you all, you did yourselves and the club proud!!

13/02/2015

Tonight we travelled to The Silversprings Hotel for the Brian Dillons BC tournament. Representing the club we had TJ Homan and Saoirse Roche.  Saoirse was first in the ring, facing the formidable Charlene Kenny Midleton BC for the third time.  Saoirse started strong, and although Charlene put in a determined perfromance from start to finish, Saoirse won each round and came away with a unanimous decision, making seven wins out of seven in her short career so far!!  Next in we had TJ Homan against Tom Cronin Mayfield BC. Tom started strong but TJ began to take the fight to Tom by the end of the first round.  TJ took the second round leaving it evens going into the last!  I really thought TJ won the last round easily but at the final bell there was a split decision, which unfortunately favoured the Mayfield BC boxer.  TJ is just starting to peak, right in time for the Championships!! Well done to bothh Saoirse and TJ, you were both magnificent on the night!!

14/02/2015

We headed to Drimnagh BC (Dublin) today for a female sparring tournament, with Saoirse Roche. Saoirse sparred against a talented girl from Mulhuddart BC, Chloe Gabrielle, and did very well, being complimented by all present, "Excellent great to see the girl's sparring other girl's from all over Dublin and Ireland even got sparring from a very talented young girl from cork!!"

22/02/2015

Saoirse was picked on The Cork team to face Donegal at The National Stadium in Dublin.

Well done to Saoirse Roche who boxed brilliantly today. Her opponent from Donegal pulled out so Saoirse had an exhibition bout against Shelby Myers Crumlin Boxing Club. Thanks for filling in Shelby.

28/03/2015 - Finals of The Munster Championships

Hard luck to Michael McDonagh today who lost out on a very close split decision in the Final of The Munster Championships. It was one round a piece going into the last round which could have gone either way. Well done Michael on a great performance.

Earlier in the day, Conor Downey was unlucky also, after a great performance bowed out of the Championships at the semi-final stage!

First in today, we had the dynamic Alex Higgins. Alex, in only his fifth fight, was in against the talented Lorcan Hurley(Tramore BC) the current Irish Champion and Irish Senior Cadet champion, who has boxed internationally and represented Ireland at last year's European Championships! Alex gave it his all and was never out of place. Unfortunately, Lorcan took the spoils today!

21/03/2015

Munster Championships 2015

Congratulations to all our boxers today, we had 3 wins out of 4. Christian Murphy and Lee Quilligan both won their bouts and Michael McDonagh got a walk over. Jake's Higgins boxed out of his skin but unfortunately didn't get the decision today. Unfortunately, Tj Homan had to pull out of the championships due to a fracture in his hand. Well done to you all, you did us proud. Come on Sunnyside BoxingClub!

First up today for Sunnyside BC, we had Christian Murphy, who won to move on to tomorrow's semi final of The Munster Championships!

Next up today for Sunnyside BC, we had Lee Quilligan, who also won to move on to tomorrow's semi final of The Munster Championships!

The next in for Sunnyside BC, was Jake Higgins, who gave one of his best performances yet this year, and although we thought he had done enough, the decision didn't go his way today at The Munster Championships!

20/04/2015

Tonight, Saoirse "Mo Chuisle" Roche entered the ring in Limerick looking to add The Munster title to her Cork County title and that is exactly what she did. Saoirse was in against the determined Eva Fitzmaurice(Sliabh Luachra BC) in an exhilharating Munster final! However, Saoirse put all her training into practice and won on a unanimous decision! Well done to Eva who gave it her all until the final bell! And well done to Saoirse, the new Girl 1 39 KG Munster Champion and still undefeated!!

22/03/2015 - Semi-Finals of The Munster Championships

Hard luck to Lee Quilligan who bowed out of the Championships today. Lee, The current Cork Champion, gave it his all but it was not to be today. Lee will come back from this, bigger and better!

Well done to Christian Murphy who followed up his win today, with another to move im into next week's finals!

19/04/2015

After weeks of preparation and sparring(thanks Rylane BC, Father Horgans BC,Midleton BC, Togher BC and not forgetting our friends in Dublin, Drimnagh BC), Saoirse Roche was ready for he Munster Championships. With three in the weight, Saoirse was drawn to fight Georgina Sheridan (Tipperary Boxing Club) in the semi finals. It was a great display by two talented boxers, however Saoirse prevailed and won on a unanimous decision to move on to the finals!

02/05/2015

Unfortunately, Saoirse bowed out of the Irish Championships today.  She entered the ring and gave it 100%, losing out to the eventual Irish Champion Alayah Butler from Monivea BC, a vey talented and strong girl.  It has been a great season for Saoirse, winning 9 out of her 10 fights, with this her only loss. Saoirse claimed the Cork and Munster tiles earlier in the year! Well done Saoirse!

15/05/2015

Today we entered four boxers in the upcoming Monkstowm Box Cup, an international tournament being hosted by the Monkstown BC in Dublin on 3rd, 4th and 5th of July.  Representing the club we have Alex Higgins, Conor Downey, Kieran Roche and Saoirse Roche.  Best of luck boys and girls!!

30/05/2015

It was another successful day for Sunnyside BC today at The Crumlin BC tournament! We arrived with 4 boxers and ended up with 6 bouts(exhibitions), Saoirse Roche was so go good she did it twice!!.  Saoirse was first in the ring.  Saoirse was in against the talented Shelby Myers (Crumlinn BC). This was a hard fought bought with both girls giving it 100%.  Next in we had Alex Higgins against Shelby's brother Michael Myers (Crumlin BC).  This was another brilliant performance from Alex, both going forward and on the counter.  Once again Alex made it hard to believe this is his first year boxing.  Conor Downey was up next and proved much too powerful for his opponent from Birr BC,  Conor using his long reach to perfection.  Next in for Sunnyside BC was "Deadly" Dylan O'Brien on his debut.  Dylan had only travelled to support his club mates but called up to box against a tough young boxer from Crumlin BC.  Dylan moved around the ring with the confidence and style of seasoned champion landing clean shots and moving back out of range in a flash. Dylan is definitely one to watch for the future.  Kieran Roche then entered the ring for his first fight in 12 months boxing this year's All Ireland finalist, from Cherry Orchard BC.  Kieran was back to his best and this was an explosive bout between two great young boxers.  Finally, Saoirse Roche was called on to give a second exhibition, this time against a girl from Whitechurch BC.  Saoirse once again attacked from the start and gave an all action display.  Well done Dylan O'Brien, Conor Downey, Kieran Roche, Alex Higgins and Saoirse Roche, rach of you gave it your all and did the club proud!! Up Sunnyside BC!!!

10/06/2015
